The August 2007 Odyssey--San Juan & Gulf Islands Aboard Whisper

Whisper Log--

Saturday, August 11th
It has been an enjoyable and eventful time! Cathy arrived on Friday at 900 as advertised. I bought a crab pot and Cathy shopped Friday Harbor shops. We left the harbor at 1230 on our way to Spencer Spit on the east side of Lopez. My first crabbing attempt netted us 2 keepers which provided dinner (photos attached). Saturday we motored down Harney Channel to Deer Harbor. Reset the crab pot from the deck of Whisper and proceeded deeper into the harbor of anchor south of the fuel dock. We went ashore for blackberries and ice cream cones. Accomplished both missions.

Alan Vogt (Blue Fin) phoned asking “Where are you?” I responded, “Where are YOU!” They were in Friday Harbor on their way to Reid Harbor on Stuart Island for the night. We were invited IF we could supply the crab for their butter and wine. Since our steaks and corn could grill in any port, we decided to go for Reid Harbor. I went out to the crab pot to discover 3 crab. One was a keeper in excess of 7.5 inches (it grows with each retelling). So Bruce, the monster crab came with us to Reid Harbor.

With all WA State buoys occupied, we tied up to the state park dock. Blue Fin arrived within the hour. We had crab spread & cracker appetizers and got to see Alan wrestle Bruce. Alan won a crab dinner for two. After dinner aboard Blue Fin, we re-gathered on Whisper at 2200 for fresh blackberry crepes.

Alan’s 0700 departure turned into 0720, but they were off to Bedwell Harbor. With the tide receding we left about 1000. With a slight easterly blowing we motored out of Reid Harbor on a heading toward the international boundary in Haro Straits. I wanted Cathy to have a sail on her last day. With a wind line showing to the south, we hoisted main and unfurled genoa in 6 kts prior to the arrival of winds up to 14.5 kts. We closed reached to the boundary and tacked over to Roche Harbor making the entrance under sail.

As I “type” this, we are sitting on the deck at Roche as my laundry turns in the wash cycle. Cathy will fly out at 5:30 and Natalie & Dolly will arrive at 6:30PM (1830 hours).

Tomorrow(Monday) we will clear Canadian customs in Bedwell Harbor. Tuesday I hope to meet up with John Reeg (Endeavour II) in the harbor by Butchart Gardens for the fireworks. Wednesday Dolly & Natalie will transfer from the Whisper water taxi to Blue Fin at Ganges on Saltspring Island.

Remember that Whisper will be up here until Labor Day weekend and after Wednesday she is crewless…
